Technology is better used as a tool and not a babysitter. Amen. It sounds like you are using technology well for your classroom management... and I love the Google photo tip... how did I not know that?! I agree that an important take away from this course is the mindset of Student as Researcher. Modeling how to find information using technology is so important for our students to see. Great job!
Emily, I feel you did a great job mentioning how you use technology in your classroom. I like the google photos ideas. I like the idea of using class doe joe in the classroom for parent communication instead of just email. I wonder how I can convenience my boss also to use class doe joe in the center. I agree, even at a young age the students are researchers and like the quote by Alan November. The conclusion is great with the quote that the students is never to young to use technology and we never know what they are capable of with their own learning. I still agree play based curriculum is key but also give the students tools with the apps to do their own research to learn on their own.
Emily, seriously, how much time did teachers waste on creating end of the week updates and emails??? We are also using ClassDoJo and love how much time we are saving. Nice job touching on Students as Researchers, because they truly are inquisitive by nature and it's so nice to be able to assist them with finding real answers to their questions.
I did not know that about Google Photos! That tool seems very useful!! I completely agree with the weekly newsletters, how many parents actually read them? I think parents are more apt to look at something on their phone over a piece of paper (sad but true). I loved the quote at the end that technology is a tool not a babysitter! Yes!!! students should be learning with technology!
Emily, I had the same problem with parent communications. I would send our a weekly email and found that parents were just looking for pictures of their kids and not really reading what we were doing during the week. ClassDojo has really been a great addition to my classroom for just this reason. I really like that you have set up goals for yourself and for your classroom.
I love how the chapter on Students as Researchers has really changed your mindset. This class has really added to our teaching methods. ClassDojo is such a great application. Probably an application I wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for this class. It would be great if your boss would allow you to use this application. Well explained that it's "never to young for children to use technology". Great job!
Emily- I like how you guys can all use google calendars to view schedules and see openings. I think we use outlook, but you are only able to see another's calendar if they choose to share it with you. I agree with you also, this class how showed me reasoning as to why children need to be taught technology so early. I think the realization of how being in times my center in with parent communication was the biggest thing I took with me this semester. We are barely even emailing parents! Phone calls and notes. I would love to push the center towards using Class Dojo because we know that the parents always have their phones with them. Great job!
I agree, children can start using technology from a young age very effectively as long as it is purposeful and not too much, because we live in a very technological world and this is the world they are growing up in so they will be surrounded by technology for the rest of their lives.
It is so true; technology helps us a teachers have a well-organized day. When used properly, technology can help our days run smoothly and efficiently.
I agree, finding ways to expose young learners to useful uses of technology can seem difficult. I like how you are allowing them to help find their own answers. They are so curios and have so many questions! Letting them find out their own answers will help them develop so many useful skills.
Using Google photos with face recognition to sort all those photos we take every year - never thought about that! Brilliant! Great presentation, too. I had a very similar reaction to the topic of students as researchers, and have enjoyed being more transparent and inclusive with my students when we need to look something up to answer one of their questions. Now we do it together!
Great job Emily! It must be so frustrating to take time to create Weekly Updates for your parents and then realize they aren't even being looked at. I, too, am interested in implementing Class Dojo into my classroom as it seems to be an app that parents will actually pay attention to since they receive notifications on their phones. I am going to have to check out Google photos and how it sorts student photos with face recognition. I agree that it is important to teach students how to do research even if it is just modeling it for them when they are young. Technology can be used for more than watching videos and playing games, and we need to teach our students how to use it.
Emily you are so right pick up and drop off time can be such a chaotic time so it is not the best time for parent communication. I have also found that parents often miss information when I have sent newsletters through email maybe because it is a one time thing that they look at and then forget about. The app ClassDojo is a great way for parents to have information in one place. They get reminders/notifications like you said sent to their phone instead of just looking at an email one time and forgetting about the information.
Emily, I agree that it is really important for us as teachers to show our students how to research information online and not just do it for them. Students in my class have actually taught me more about technology than I have them! You are spot on when you said you believe Class Dojo would be more effective than a weekly newsletter since it is immediately accessable from their phones. Great presentation!
Emily, nice presentation. This course has opened our eyes to what technology can do in our preschool classrooms. Great job capturing it. I hope your director will agree to some of these changes to be implemented in your school. I agree, that the technology does not replace the teachers, but enhances the teaching.
Em, First off, thank you for introducing me to google calendar. It has changed my organizational skills for the better. I am excited to learn more bout it! So thank you again for that. I love how you acknowledged the fact the an email may not be the most effective way for communication. Although you did that for all of your communication you learned that it just wasn’t as successful as you wanted. Class Dojo works. I feel once you start it and the more you use it, you will see that it is way more successful then an email. Thank you for sharing. Well done!
Yes, Tech needs to be use as a tool and not to replace the " Teacher" . I totally agree with you. It seems in more than half ofthe class used ClassDojo- I seems to work well for everybody. I guess the only problem is to find time during a busy day to update/add or change anything on the app. Love your presentation Emily. Good job.
Considering I am your co-teacher, I will say, you take your own time to create those weeklys and they are not read. It seems as though email is used only for selfish reasons when needing information only pertaining to you. Eventhough we send minimal group emails, it seems as though they are lumped in the junk mail category! I agree, I think we should be modeling how to research when they ask questions because even when they are not physically using the technology they can still be a part of the process.
As your other co-teacher, I am also pretty confident that parents are not reading the weekly updates and using them as a source of information. It is obvious that just a few things that we post on facebook are often more effective than mass emails. I do believe our school community would benefit from the use of a parent communication application as parents would have access to all of the information they need in one place as opposed to searching through junk email to find an email they likely deleted. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we can incorporate some of these new strategies into our classroom next year!
